Update: Portlight Responds to California Wildfires and Hurricanes Maria, Irma and Harvey; We Need Your Continued Support! - Portlight
Greetings to our friends, supporters and everyone impacted by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and the California wildfires over the past 54 days:
Thanks to each of you for your ongoing support for our work. Portlight Strategies and the Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies assistance is not limited to hurricanes. We are also assisting survivors of the California wildfires who are older adults and people with disabilities. We do this while continuing to assist many thousands of hurricane survivors with disabilities, older adults and their families and communities. There are many urgent and often lifesaving needs in all of the communities affected by the hurricanes and fires. As we carry out our work we are asking for your continued support.
Since our last update we successfully deployed teams in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. On the ground in the hardest hit areas, they are identifying needs and offering solutions. This includes delivering food and water, medical supplies, generators, disability equipment, communication devices, water purification, satellite and cell phones and items for meeting immediate needs. We continue to work to get more of these life sustaining items shipped and delivered to people who need it the most. We are working in support of local disability organizations, and we are guided by their knowledge of the needs and preferences of their community.
Our work is far from done, and we need your continued support for meeting the cost of travel, communications and sustainability for our team and purchase of generators, fuel, water purification, communication solutions and the cost associated with purchasing items too difficult to ship.
We are grateful for our volunteers and the partnership resources shared by our friends from the National Council on Independent Living, Cajun Navy, Pass It On Center and Trach Mommas. In addition to our support for individuals and local organizations, we also use your donations to support the disaster work of our national partners and focused advocacy efforts towards meeting the disaster related civil rights issues of individuals with disabilities and disaster impacted communities..
Your assistance is urgently needed, truly appreciated and always used where it’s needed most.
Thank you for your support and partnership.
